The course is designed for
postgraduates who wish to make a career in bioinformatics.
This rapidly growing field, defined as the use of
computational methods to assist biology research, is fast
becoming the cornerstone of the gathering and analysis of the
vast amounts of data that such research is nowadays producing.
Among its many applications drug design, data mining and
macromolecule sequence analysis are the main. The
bioinformatics industry has great potential in terms of career
opportunities and India is poised on the brink of a major
Biology-IT revolution.
The first two semesters of the course cover topics required
for a sound knowledge of both Biology-related and IT subjects.
These include Molecular Biology, Sequence Analysis, Database
Analysis, Programming Skills and Linux. After successful
completion of first two semesters of MScBI, if a student
wishes to discontinue, such a student will be awarded the PG
Diploma in Bio-Informatics (PGDBI).
The third and fourth semesters are geared towards providing
students with advanced training in areas like Drug Design,
Plant Genomics, Advanced IT Topics and Emerging Technologies.
After successful completion of the course, students will be
awarded the Master of Science in Bioinformatics (MScBI)
degree.
